Where Every Child Gets to Experience the Magic: Our Visit to Sensory Play Center

Recently, CT Princess Parties had the absolute pleasure of visiting Sensory Play Center in Shelton, Connecticut, as part of its Grand Opening celebration. Mermaid Celeste joined families for an Under the Sea experience filled with imagination, play, smiles, and plenty of mermaid magic.

We were excited to be there, of course. But this particular event also gave us the opportunity to celebrate something that matters deeply to us.

From our first conversations with Martha, it was clear that Sensory Play Center was built around a philosophy we share:

Every child deserves a space where they can experience joy, play, and connection in the way that feels right for them.

A Space Designed for Children to Be Themselves

Sensory Play Center has created something incredibly special for neurodivergent children and their families.

It is a space designed with different sensory needs, communication styles, comfort levels, and ways of engaging in mind. Rather than expecting every child to experience play in exactly the same way, the environment gives children room to explore and participate on their own terms.

That philosophy immediately resonated with us because it's the same approach we bring to character entertainment.

Anyone who works with children knows that no two children walk into an experience the same way.

Some children will spot a princess across the room and immediately come running.

Some will want to tell a superhero everything they know about superheroes.

Some want a hug.

Some want to sing.

Some want to show a character their favorite toy.

And some children would much rather observe from a comfortable distance until they decide whether — or how — they'd like to interact.

All of those experiences are valid.

There Is No "Right" Way to Meet a Character

At CT Princess Parties, our performers are there to create an experience with a child, not to dictate one for them.

That means paying attention.

It means following a child's lead and recognizing their cues. It means understanding when someone is ready for a big, enthusiastic interaction and when a quieter approach is more appropriate.

We never believe a child owes a character a hug, a photograph, a conversation, eye contact, or participation in an activity.

If a child wants to run into Mermaid Celeste's arms, wonderful.

If they'd rather wave from across the room, that's wonderful too.

If they want to spend twenty minutes telling a princess about their favorite subject, we're listening.

And if having a mermaid nearby while they happily continue doing their own thing is exactly the amount of interaction they want that day, that's okay too.

The magic belongs to the child. They get to decide what it looks like.

Why This Visit Meant So Much to Us

That's what made our visit to Sensory Play Center feel so special.

We were entering a space intentionally created to meet children where they are — something that felt very familiar to our team.

Character entertainment is sometimes imagined as something very structured: the grand entrance, the excited children, the hugs, the photographs, the songs, the games, and the big goodbye.

Those moments can certainly be magical.

But magic can also be quiet.

It can be a child watching a mermaid from the other side of the room and eventually deciding to come a little closer.

It can be a conversation about something completely unrelated to princesses.

It can be parallel play.

It can be a wave.

It can simply be knowing that something extraordinary is happening nearby without any expectation that you have to participate in it.

A successful character visit doesn't have to look the same for every child.

Neither does childhood.

Inclusion Isn't an Add-On

Representation and inclusion are important parts of what we're building at CT Princess Parties, and that goes beyond the characters we offer or the performers children see portraying them.

It also means thinking about how children are welcomed into the experience once we're there.

Sensory needs aren't inconveniences.

Different communication styles aren't problems to solve.

A child who doesn't want to participate in a traditional way isn't "missing out."

Sometimes creating an inclusive experience means doing more.

Sometimes it means doing less.

And sometimes it simply means giving a child enough space and time to decide for themselves.

This isn't something we reserve for a special category of events.

It's how we believe children's entertainment should be done.

What Martha has created in Shelton is more than a place to play. It's a place built on the understanding that children experience the world differently — and that those differences deserve to be accommodated, respected, and celebrated.

Those are values we are proud to share.

We hope families throughout Connecticut will discover Sensory Play Center, support what Martha is building, and help spaces like this continue to grow.

And, of course, we'd be delighted if a little princess, superhero, or mermaid magic finds its way back to Sensory Play Center someday.
