Why We Never Force a Child to Hug a Character

One of the most common things we hear from parents before a party is:
"My child is a little shy."
Sometimes that means they'll hide behind Mom's leg for the first ten minutes.
Sometimes it means they'll wave from across the room.
And sometimes it means they've spent three weeks talking about meeting their favorite character, only to freeze the moment that character walks through the door.
Believe it or not, that's completely normal.
In fact, some of the most magical interactions we've ever witnessed have started with a child who wanted absolutely nothing to do with us.
At CT Princess Parties, we never force a child to hug a character, pose for a photo, participate in an activity, or interact before they're ready.
Why?
Because every child experiences excitement differently.
For some children, meeting their favorite character is the best moment of their year. They run across the room with open arms before we've even finished introducing ourselves.
For others, it's a big feeling.
Imagine being four years old and suddenly finding yourself face-to-face with your favorite character. Whether it's a princess, superhero, mermaid, pirate, or storybook hero, that's a big moment for a little person.
Our performers are trained to follow the child's lead.
If a child wants to sit quietly and listen to a story, we'll read together.
If they want to ask a hundred questions, we'll answer every one.
If they need fifteen minutes to warm up, we'll happily spend fifteen minutes chatting with their friends while they observe from a safe distance.
We've learned something important over the years:
Children are far more likely to engage when they feel respected.
The moment a child realizes there's no pressure, no expectations, and no one insisting they participate before they're comfortable, something wonderful usually happens.
They come to us.
Sometimes it's five minutes later.
Sometimes it's twenty.
Sometimes it's just a small wave from across the room.
And that's okay.
Because our goal has never been to create the perfect photo.
Our goal is to create a positive experience.
Some of our favorite party memories involve children who started the event hiding behind a parent and ended it proudly holding a character's hand.
Not because anyone pushed them.
Because they were given the time and space they needed.
Every child is different.
Every party is different.
And we believe the best magic happens when children are allowed to engage in their own way, at their own pace.
After all, confidence grows best when it's invited—not required.
